What are German Saturday Schools?

We are the umbrella organization for five German Language Saturday Schools in the Bay Area.

Classes are open to everybody interested in learning the German language. These schools fill a void in foreign language education.

In these schools students of all ages can learn German at all levels

(Beginners welcome!), and become acquainted with the customs, history and culture of German speaking countries.

The Saturday Schools are nonprofit tax-exempt

organizations that do not discriminate against sex, race, creed, and national or ethnic origin.

We welcome everybody!

Curriculum

Preschool and Kindergarten

Children are immersed in spoken German. Songs, games and simple directions are taught in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Learning while playing is an integral part of this program.

Elementary Grades

Beginners: children are introduced to basic language concepts. Emphasis is on comprehension and simple communicative skills.

Advanced Level: Students are introduced to reading, writing and grammar concepts.

Upper Grades

Beginners: Basic reading, writing and speaking is taught with the emphasis on  spoken language.

Advanced Level: Language learning is augmented by studies of culture, literature, history, and geography of the German speaking countries.

Adult Classes

Classes are offered for beginning, intermediate and advanced students. Emphasis is on mastering active communication in social and business settings.

Examinations

Most German Language Saturday Schools prepare their students for the AATG High School Tests and the Advanced Placement (AP) Exam.

Tuition

The schools are financed from tuition,  fundraising activities, donations and subsidies from German government agencies. Tuition varies with individual schools.

Faculty

To ensure high quality instruction, teachers are natives of German speaking countries with German or American teaching credentials.
